This review is from: Panasonic BB-HCM705A PoE Indoor Dome MegaPixel Network Camera (Electronics)

Plus: The 2×2 pixel binning feature is amazing under low light conditions. I placed this in the darkest spot underneath my desk with the lights off in the room and the details were sharp as in daylight. This camera can see better in the darkness than my own eyes.

The Minus: This is a fixed camera, the pan/tilt is manual, cannot be changed through the Internet. It has a tiny bit of digital pan/tilt which moves the scene slightly over the web, but if you want any large movements then you have to take off the screws on the bubble and move the mechanism with your fingers.

Since this is a fixed position camera, in most cases the BB-HCM715/735 models will work better because they have the same capabilities plus they also have remote pan/tilt. Buy this one mainly if it really has to be on the ceiling and if it’s supposed to only look at one spot.

Not a real megapixel network camera!, March 24, 2011

This review is from: Panasonic BB-HCM705A PoE Indoor Dome MegaPixel Network Camera (Electronics)

WARNING: This is not a true megapixel network camera. To my dismay, after ordering and installing two of these cameras, I found 1280×960 pics can only be viewed if most other vital functions in the camera are turned off, and only through the direct web interface page. Timed picture transmission, motion detection, sound detection, and external triggers can NOT be used, at all, when the 1280×960 picture size is enabled. This means that the camera becomes nothing more that a glorified webcam and that you will be better off buying a netbook with camera and running a VNC server on it. It is very disappointing (and illegal in most European countries) that Panasonic would lend its name to this kind of marketing scam.
Furthermore, the PoE functionality is becoming rather pointless since PoE power injectors are becoming very hard to find in the market.
To sum up, stay away from this camera and go with another brand (Axis or Toshiba, for example).

Tested equipment: BB-HCM715, criticism also valid for BB-HCM735 and BB-HCM705.
